After day two of haltering, Hope decided we were up to something. The smart little twerp wouldn't come anywhere near us when we had her halter in our hand.

creating her own crazy
May 9th was her last halter-free day. At just about 4 weeks old. Brad wrapped his strong arms around Hope and secured her against a corner wall in the stall. Once she stopped resisting, I put the halter on her and adjusted the fit. The spunky monkey is still wearing her halter to this day. We had originally planned on taking it on/off each day. For now, it is more important to leave it on and get her leading. Both horses will benefit from outdoor turnout.

The first few days with a halter on there was a lot of head shaking and hardware jingling. That has since stopped.

Our farrier trimmed Cierra's feet right outside their stall. Momma cared less that she was away from her baby and seemed to enjoy spa time. Hope was not as happy being left out of the action.

Hope found her voice about a week ago and likes to talk to the other horses, and us humans. Her little whinnies are really cute!! I wasn't able to catch her early squeaks on video. Her voice already sounds more grown up now. Here she is running-n-jingling away:

With Hope haltered, Brad could begin teaching her to give to resistance and lead. Stay tuned!

Oh I wish you would reconsider leaving that halter on her. I'm sure you have seen how easy it is for her to reach up with a hind leg to scratch behind her ear or to scratch her nose or under her jaw. That little hoof can get trapped in that halter and that is an awful wreck. So much damage possible. It is not that big a deal to halter them every day, and they do get better at it and it can be a daily training session. Please reconsider.
That being said... what great photos! Love the one where her little back feet are making sand waves. And she has a nice big girl whinny too!

Thanks for sharing your concern Shirley. I really dislike seeing halters left on any unattended horse. We felt it was necessary to speed up the haltering/leading process and get Hope to stop eating sand. Colic is no picnic.
She progressed so quickly and is really doing amazing!! We will be going back to our regular on/off method of operation.
Arline, I wish I had just a little of Hopes energy. She is such a sweet girl. Similar to her mom :)

She sure is cute with her little halter. Very fast, and powers from the back. Her new found voice, so sweet and grownup. I love the videos and photos. Cierra is beautiful , too. What a great mama !
She really has the moves. What a beautiful filly she is.
Oh the fun of having a young horse. She seems to be smart too!
