Well folks, we are 100% immersed in July mode and it just started. Low 90'sF and 95-100% humidity. The mosquitos and biting flat flies arrived in full force yesterday. UGH!!
My head net has been clipped to my belt loop for weeks. I knew this day would come.
Unfortunately, there isn't much I can do for the dogs. Tank isn't bothered by biting pests. He has a thick course light colored coat. On the other hand, my old grand dog Jameson gets attacked ruthlessly by swarms of biters. The flat flies draw blood and create welts. The F-ers love his ears. J is a trooper, but I just can't allow it. Until biters calm down, our time outside will be limited.
Before the swarms arrived, I enjoyed a different kind of float in our lil' Cowgirl Pool! It stayed in storage last year. I missed it. Such a great way to cool off at the end of the day, and relax without going anywhere.
The Fourth of July was my favorite holiday. Best memories as a kid was decorating my bike for the neighborhood parade, and of course watching fireworks. I found a somewhat similar kid parade for my country raised children to experience.
We enjoyed watching little-big city firework displays from our old house. Rhythm N Booms fireworks were coordinated to music. You could tune in on a radio. It was epic! A huge event that drew massive crowds. We lived on top of a hill and hosted family friends for years. Brad would also light off his chosen impressive fireworks for our guests. Complete with a large self made PVC pipe fireworks holder. Ohhh, the memories!!
Things are quiet now. I don't even decorate the house anymore. One thing that hasn't changed, is my appreciation for freedom (that isn't free).
For those of you celebrating, have a Happy & Safe Fourth of July!!

Happy 4th of July! Freedom sure isn’t free and the first responders who keep us safe are right up there, too. Five days ago we had a tragedy here where someone set a fire and lured our local firemen to it, then killed 2. I was on the freeway when police, SWAT, ambulances, —every emergency service officer was rushing off the exits and toward the trapped firemen. Brought tears to my eyes how they rush toward danger. Later that night we went down and held the US flag for the freeway procession with the bodies of the two who fell. Hard to believe that was just last Sunday. I hope everyone is safe tonight and no fires get started.
That is some HOT and humid weather!! I love the way you think. A cowgirl pool and Bloody Mary are my kind of day. Love the face net, too. Smart!
What sweet memories of previous 4th of July’s. Small towns are the best. We’re sitting home alone tonight, too. It’s just the way it all shook out.
Enjoy a safe and happy 4th hopefully with air conditioning. 😆
Growing up a farm kid we rarely saw fireworks. It was time to make hay the first cutting was always ready by July 4th. Oh the bugs…once we get home they will be nasty. Here in town they spay.
The bugs are not bad here...but I still managed to get nailed by several sweat bees while mowing and sweating...LOL.
I'm glad you got your head net out, I carry mine all of the time too and oddly don't have to use it until I get down into the brush by the creek.
I even heard a 'skeeter' yesterday while in the woods!
I know, lucky us.
Charlie can't do the heat, poor little guy is so close to the ground on warm day hikes that he gets hot quickly from the radiant heat.
Good to see you!
I have a selfie with a head net somewhere too. I think I had to wear it on the Hay Valley Trail one late summer day...lots and lots of man eating bugs!
Oh Linda, that is so awful about the firemen. We had a similar thing happen in the late 90's, a double murder and the person set the house on fire but first made a hole inside the door to trap firefighters. Evil evil evil. Never did catch the guy.
Quiet holidays are fine with me! Getting old....
I used to love all those hot summer days, we lived by Kootenay Lake and spent our summers on the beach. I don't remember all the bugs like we have now, but I guess it's all bird food!
Those flat flies, are they the little triangular shaped ones? We have them here and they cling to the horses and leave big holes.
Linda, I do not understand the evil in the world. I am sure the Firefighter ambush hit harder. Senseless and heartbreaking. Thank you for showing support and holding a flag <3

I am glad you have a home away from home in town Connie.

You are fortunate to not be infested with biting bugs Val. Land critters sure vary. Some places near us have gnats like crazy. Unfortunately we did not hang Mosquito Eradicators or Fly Traps this year :\
.............
We get the nasty triangle biters too Shirley. The ones that bite Jameson are elongated reddish/black fliers. When they land their wings come together and seem to flatten. They also create a hole bite, nastier than mosquitos. Tried to ID but all that came up is Box Elder bugs.
Everyone complains about swallows. I like the swooping bug eaters!
