Sunday Stills ~ Letter F

I started orchestra in elementary school. Years passed, and everyone else got there own instrument. I was painfully aware we couldn't afford one, and continued to rent. I was twelve when my dear uncle from Spain surprised me with a very special gift, my own instrument...

As years and skills progressed, we were forced to play only classical music. I wanted to play upbeat music, on a fiddle. Every time I asked for help, I was told no. Private lessons were not an option. They said I had to learn Bach, Beethoven etc first, before I could fiddle, consequently I eventually quit playing. I still don't care much for classical music, altho I respect it. I'm a firm believer children will remain interested in arts much longer, if you don't squash their dreams...

My beloved spanish instrument saw a renewed life, when my daughter learned to play. It has been unused for many years now. Maybe someday I will re-learn to play it, as the fiddle I had hoped it would be...

It is a beautiful instrument. Pick it up and play some day, just for the fun. I do that with the piano - I don't pick it up, mind you!! - but I play, even though I am rubbish :)

I always wished I could play an instrument. I agree if teachers would just let kids do what they want(to an extent, lol) there would be a lot more success in certain areas. We had a teacher who let kids read comics, at least they were reading something when they said they hated to read.

Thanks for the comments. I had so many ideas for the letter F, but decided to shoot a "fiddle". There are good reasons for sticking to curriculum, but why not foster a kid's passion with helpful suggestions, extra credit or whatever? I should take it for a tune-up, buy the family ear plugs, and give it a whirl!

I learned to play on a rented violin and viola as well. Beautiful instruments. I ended up with a great love of classical music although I haven't played since I was in high school.

I know what you mean about having your desire to play taken away. My grandmother's violin sits in the closet unplayed...

I've always wished I had even a tiny shred of musical talent. I don't, but I do enjoy the beauty of a fine instrument. Lovely.

That is a great instrument to have even if it doesn't get used. I'm sure to the next generation of family it will be a treasure to have!
