What can I say about nature in May, other than it is always an interesting month. With a mixed bag of weather. Most sunny days we warm up by mid day and cool down at night. It creates the best feeling!! The bugs are usually not too bad. Yet. Pastures green up, and horses act silly. And apparently forgetful.
We alternate our pastures about once a month. Whichever pasture the herd is in, they longingly look into the other. Because, you know, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. If you don't believe me, ask your animals.
Brad lets me know when he is switching horses to the lower pasture. It is further away and typically gives me one of few opportunities to shoot equine action. Altho with fencing :( There is not always action, many times the herd just mosey's into the fresh pasture. I take my spot on our deck, and wait.
He opened the lower gate and called the horses. No one came running. They were in the closest corner, curiously watching him. I couldn't believe my eyes. Did our horses forget where the pasture openings were?
I will give Cierra the benefit of the doubt, it had been many months since she was in the lower pasture. As for the other three, no words. Except captions.
heading to the upper pasture opening in disbelief
to 'um help the horses
Nemo follows Brad up to the opening,
along the other side of the fence
off goes the first
mmmmm, where should I start?
"Kodaaa, Haaarmony, Cee Ceeeee"
Harmony started to walk up by Brad, but changed her mind.
Cierra wondering, how did Nemo get over there?
"Oh, hi Brad! Any idea how we can get over by Nemo?"
Koda & Cierra wondering what Brad is doing. Me too.
OH, he took his belt off to lead our silly horses. Can you hear me laughing?
usually they come when we call them, or just follow the leader
apparently today, all our horses needed a personal escort
Really Koda, sigh.
Only you.
Anyone want to ride my horse?
How about fly my kite?
off goes the second
Harmony is too dignified to be led by a belt.
My fav photo of the series, our 21 year old powerhouse.
off goes the third
Harmony is/was such a pretty mover.
Nemo, so bossy
Cierra was running the upper fence line and calling the others,
but always comes back to her guy.
last but far from least
wait for meeee!!

Poor things! You tired them out by moving them!
I love the silliness that equine bring to our lives.
Those photos are awesome. I need you to come next time when I let my mules out to the back woods!
Buck Fart and Carry on!
If think I'd ride any of yours, I'm sure they are well behaved and good horses. I DO want to come and see them one day.
They are so beautiful.
I'm still chuckling over them all laying with their halters on.
Too funny.
This made my day!
The horses think you put the gate in the wrong place ;0)
Lovely photos- my fave is the one of Cierra in full stride, even if she does have a fencepost mid back. Beautiful mare.
Haha the look on Brad's face when Koda is performing!
Great pictures of how silly horses can be, love them all. I was wondering what Brad was doing too until I read the caption! Necessity is the mother of invention and a belt works when there’s no lead line around. 👍🏻They’re all great movers except when they have their halters on. That was too funny. “Uh oh, do halters mean we have to work? Better lie down and look really tired”.
They’re all so beautiful, especially Cierra. What a body! That’s crazy they all lied down with their halters on!! Horses never fail to surprise me. They have minds of their own about what they want to do, and it doesn’t always make sense. I know you’re expecting temps like we’ve had. They’re not fun, and they really zap the energy out of the herd...and humans. Good luck! Stay cool!
Thanks for sharing in our equine humor!! You just never know what a day with horses will bring. The only time we've haltered our horses when they were laying down was towards the end of a trail riding vacation, when they were just plain tired. I think in this case their bellies were full and that warming Spring sun felt wonderful. We literally had to pull each of them up to their feet.
Thank you also for the kind photos comments, and seeing past the obstacles. I only do basic processing, crop, adjust levels and have to sharpen (I shoot raw). I truly dislike fencing and things touching my subjects, unless on purpose. So distracting! However, these days I only edit further under certain circumstances.
Fun series of photos! Silly horses:)
